Banana, Nutella & Cream Cheese Cake

Three cakes and a lot of photos!

I generally do not like bananas. There texture is just weird to me and it just taste that good to me. But banana bread, muffins or in this case a cake is a completely different story. I loved this banana cake. And it was very banana-y. I was trying to think of a good filling buttercream flavor that would pair well with the cream cheese outside and then Nutella! came to me. Well Nutella kinda pairs well with anything but with this cake and frosting I thought it was pretty lovely.
And three cakes! I had found small cake pans and have been wanting to use them so bad and a bunch of bananas that were turning brown was the perfect excuse. I used two batches of batter to make all these cakes, I'll go find the exact inches of the pans and let you know in a bit.

So what do you think of the glazed part?! I love making cakes now. It's so much fun to frost the cake, trying to find the most perfect decoration for it, and the mini cakes are just so much more appealing to me. I love a big cake and i love cupcakes but their is something about a personalized size cake that is so special, you can hold in in your hands and it just seems precious to me.
What kind of cake to make next? Who knows! I'm feeling something fruity or caramel-y or ..... I must looks through some cookbooks for inspiration.

Hope everyone is having a Happy Father's Day, hopefully you did something nice for your dad. As usual my fathers day dessert extravaganza with be a few days late.

UPDATE

The cake pan sizes I used were:
with no Nutella: 7 inch round
with one layer of Nutella: 3 inch round
with three layers of Nutella: 6 inch round

I made a double batch of batter and just divided it among the pans.

This looks amazing! The glaze gives such a lovely finish, and I'm also not really a fan of bananas. Perhaps this is one for me to try!!

I love the flavor combo and the cakes look beautiful, as always. How did you like the glaze on top? I was wondering how you got the cream cheese to spread so perfectly, it's a great idea to get that perfectly smooth look without icky fondant.

i just spent an hour going through your blog and YUM! now i need to figure out when i can make some of these recipes.

Anna: thanks! I glaze I thought tasted really good. Not like fondant taste, just another sweet layer. I only get the frosting smooth by lots and lots of mistakes and figuring out how to correct them. Watch some YouTube videos on frosting a cake! it helped me

Your cakes look absolutely gorgeous. I especially love the powdered sugar glaze, I can't wait to try it out on a cake :-)

classic I just made (and posted) a nutella-nana muffin recipe and here's your truly delicious looking cake. I think we should switch kitchens for a day and try each others'!

Nutella and bananas go together like spaghetti and meatballs. I can't wait to try this out!

I feel exactly the same way you do about bananas. Love them in stuff (esp. banana pancakes); can't handle them on their own. My childhood also featured Nutella as a major food group, so I can't wait to try this cake! It's also the perfect recipe for a small cake. One you could have a slice of for breakfast on a foggy morning. Thanks for sharing!

I JUST finished making this cake for no reason at all except that your description and photos inspired me. My baby is going to wake up in an hour to nurse and I'll have missed out on a few hours of sleep and I don't even care. Tomorrow we will eat cake and I believe it will be epic. Oh yes, it will be epic.

Amy Anne: that's amazing! Hope you enjoy it :)

what is the recipe measurements for the smaller cake?!

I love your blog!! Wonderful content! Just tried the recipe- although time consuming definitely delicious! A recommendation to others would be to make sure and chill both the creamcheese and the nutella buttermilk. This may be obvious to some but i dumbly tried to use them fresh out of the food processor- very runny!! Thank you for another amazing recipe!!

I tried this recipe and i think your pie pan measurement doesn't jive with 1) photo and 2) instructions on the receipt card...? i used the 8 inch pie pan per the card instructions and the cake was too thin to slice in half and looked much larger than the one in your photograph. i read the blog but printed the recipe "card" and went with that. No worries, just extra nuetalla icing for cupcakes!

Julie Marie said...

I hope you are using a cake pan and not a pie dish! Well sorry it didn't work put for you. A standard 8 inch cake pan can generally be cut in half. I put that pan because that is what most people have. Though like it says in the post, I used smaller pans which are taller so can be sliced better

Thankyou Julie for the beautiful recipes and inspiration! I made this cake using 9 inch cake tins and it turned out perfectly! I took it to an afternoon tea at work and the news of its deliciousness spread so quickly that I had to make a second one to share with our patients (I work in a little rehabilitation hospital in the country). It was the highlight of the day for some very elderly and sick people :)

I'm making this cake today as a trial run for my daughters wedding cake. How did you get such perfectly even layers of the nutella buttercream between each layer?
(FYI - I think the Nutella buttercream is the best I ever tasted....even better than my own peanut butter buttercream)

Anonymous said...

this will be my first time baking a layer cake and i literally could not have found a more perfect one to bake :))) thnx

Ellie said...

Tried the cake and it was kinda hard to cut into 4 pieces, it was too thin. But... We absolutely loved the frosting!! However all of it together is like sugar overload... in a good and a bad way!! Overall I would say it is worth trying, and by the way your pictures are really chic and cool!
