Brown Butter Cake with Cookie Dough Frosting

Oh dear, it is so hot today. I thought fall was coming in a few days yet this feels like hotter than any day we had in the summer. I barely want to move, no air conditioning and decided to bake bread today. Not the best combination given that I had to have the oven at 500 degrees.

Anyways, I made this cake well not really a few days ago, a few weeks ago now. Oops, forgot to post about it. I made it for my, then pregnant Aunt, the baby is now like two weeks old or so. Oh the frosting on this cake! Truly the exact taste of cookie dough but even better because their is no fear of eating raw eggs.
The brown butter cake that I paired with it came out to a nice combination. The cake was not overly sweet but still had that amazing rich flavor of brown butter. I'm so happy that my work introduced me to brown butter, never even having heard of it before. But the simple browning of the butter and getting those amazing little flecks at the bottom of the pan makes everything taste better. A simple would be white cake is turned into a luscious, nutty cake that would be amazing to eat on its own.

I once read not to scrape the browned flecks at the bottom of the pan when you brown butter, but that is where more of the goodness falls. Always use the flecks. Always!

Hope everyone is baring through this weather and that my Aunt enjoyed the cake! So this was a cake for the pregnancy and now I am requested to make a cake or dessert for the baby. Obviously not for the baby to eat, but you know. Haven't been able to think of something that is just right... maybe something with meringue, so it looks like clouds... Suggestions?

Goodness. That sounds amazing. I love brown butter. And cookie dough. As for baby treats... after having my kids I just wanted chocolate. :) But you could search Pinterest. There are a million good ideas there.

This looks so good (to eat and to look at, too). I saw this cake on Sprinkle Bakes yesterday and it would be really cute for a baby girl or boy, depending on the color you choose. The cake is here: http://www.sprinklebakes.com/2011/08/pink-vanilla-cotton-candy-cake.html

are these film or were they taken with your Mk II (saw it on your twitter, congrats!)? In any case, really gorgeous photos... and cake, of course. I dunno, I always thought Katie Quinn Davies' frosting on her guinness cake looked like clouds:

meringue seems like a good choice too.

I love that you posted the money "hand shot" with the cake. That's one of my favorite ways to eat it. It's not lady like, but it's certainly soul satisfying. Speaking of which, it also sounds like this recipe fulfills that need as well, with its brown butter and uncanny cookie dough flavoring!

ooh, and for the baby cake, if you want meringue looking topping, try the s'mores cake. It was a huge hit. http://legallydelish.wordpress.com/2011/09/01/neglect-and-marshmallow-frosting/

Hello! I really love your blog and read it regularly, although I don't have a blog myself. I was wondering if there is any way that you could enlarge your beautiful recipe pictures? I'm an aspiring baker and I love your recipes, but with a few of them, including this one which sounds AMAZING, I can't read the recipes! Or do you know of a way that I can enlarge them myself on my computer? I'm not very technology-savvy...
You take lovely photos, by the way!

Lovvveee this. My boyfriend's birthday is coming up, I might have to try this out...

And, Leah, clicking on the images opens up a new window with just the image at its original size (which means larger!). Whatever browser you use -- whether it's firefox, internet explorer, chrome, safari, etc -- should have a zoom button, which you can use if you still can't properly read the recipe. Hope that helps!

(sorry for the delete, I was too embarrassed over the typos!)

Oh my goodness, this looks positively heavenly. Just the thought of cookie dough icing (not to mention the brown butter cake, brown butter is my favorite and the reasons why madelines will always be my favorite) has me salivating.

so i made this.... and after 40 minutes hasn't baked at all, and has completely overflowed out of my pan. :( I looked at the original recipe and it says to use TWO pans and not one... there seems to be a fewdifferences in between the original, and your recipe. I'll try to bake for a little longer, but looks like it won't work out....

I just made this and cooked it in a 7x3 pan but the cake mushroomed over the edge and the middle never baked... I'm starting over and trying in 2 cake pans.
